For decades he has been considered one of the nation's premier basketball writers, basketball-talent evaluators and sports journalists. In 1992, Sports Illustrated referred to him as one of the "10 most influential members of the media." The United States Basketball Writers Association agreed, recently electing him to its Hall of Fame.
Now Frank Burlison is Scout.com's Basketball Columnist and Expert. Burlison will begin twice-weekly columns for the Network on college basketball, as well as contribute features, NBA Draft coverage and college and professional prospect evaluations. Burlison's first piece for Scout, a preview of the NBA Draft, will appear in Scout.com's post-Signing Day National Recruiting Guide and his online pieces will begin appearing on the Network in March, just in time for all the college-basketball madness.
Burlison will be inducted into the USBWA Hall of Fame on April 4, 2005, during the NCAA Final Four in St. Louis.
"To use a basketball analogy, we're the Los Angeles Lakers in 1996 and we just signed Shaq," said Glenn Nelson, Scout Media's editor-in-chief.
Nelson would know how to judge an elite basketball acquisition. He has written a book on basketball and his other writings on the sport have been published in other books and national publications and won numerous national awards. He also coaches and publishes a basketball website.
"Our team of basketball recruiting analysts and evaluators, led by Dave Telep, already is far and away the best in the business, and Scout.com has the best collection of basketball-centric, college team sites anywhere on the Internet," Nelson said. "Adding Frank Burlison to that mix makes for an exciting combination for our readers. His expertise on basketball runs the gamut from high school to college to the pros. Again, to use the parlance of the sport, Frank is in triple-threat position any time he is courtside or mans the keyboard."
Burlison was the originator in 1977 of the renowned Best in the West team, widely considered the forerunner of national recruiting surveys for major newspapers, for the Long Beach Press-Telegram, where he started his journalism career and presently covers college basketball and local sports.
Over the years, Burlison has covered college basketball and football, the NBA and Olympics for the Press-Telegram, Orange Country (Calif.) Register and FOXSports.com, for whom he was the national college-basketball columnist and performed radio and television work. Burlison has been credentialed to cover every Final Four since 1986 and was one of the original members of the McDonald's All-American Selection Committee, which has been in existence since 1978.
Burlison also is a member of the national advisory committee of the John R. Wooden Award, the most prestigious honor a college player can receive, and was elected to the Southern California Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association in 1987, for his contributions to high school basketball.
"I am very excited about joining the Scout.com and contributing my observations about basketball to its readers, both in the online network and the Scout Media magazines," Burlison said.
Burlison joins a storied team of basketball experts and websites at Scout.com. Telep, the National Director of Basketball Scouting for Scout.com since 2001, also is a member of the selection committees of the McDonald's All-American Game and Naismith High School Award and has written for numerous national publications. Tracy Pierson, Scout.com's West Basketball Recruiting Editor, and Mike Sullivan, the network's East Recruiting Editor, also are voting members of the McDonald's All-American Game Selection Committee. Pierson and Greg Hicks, considered one of the best pure scouts in the country, formed one of the sport's best-known basketball sites, Prep West Hoops, in 1998. Sullivan was the national recruiting editor at Rivals before coming over to Scout.com. Jeff Goodman, who writes about basketball for such publications as USA Today and the Washington Post, is a basketball recruiting analyst and compiles the well-regarded prepschool rankings for Scout.com
Their work appears at www.ScoutHoops.com, the national basketball recruiting site at Scout.com. Basketball coverage is in abundance on the Network, with some of the Web's most highly regarded hoops sites, including InsideCarolina.com (North Carolina), Phog.net (Kansas), InsideTheVille.com (Louisville), GUnation.com (Gonzaga), MarquetteHoops.com (Marquette) and Chris Monter's CollegeBasketballNews.com. One of the most storied basketball sites on the Internet, Kentucky Sports Report, is joining the network on March 1.
"If you are a basketball fan, Scout.com is the place to be," said Peter Gruman, Scout.com's General Manager. "Frank Burlison and Kentucky Sports Report both coming on in March, just as March Madness is starting, our Network will be hoops heaven on the Internet."
