Skeen Named AP Player of the Year

After seasons that concluded with state championships for their respective teams, Jamie Skeen of North Mecklenburg and Rashanda McCants of Asheville were both named North Carolina State Player of the Year by the Associated Press.

The superstar on a superstar filled roster, Jamie Skeen ended his junior campaign with the MVP of the 4A State Championship game after posting 17 points and 14 rebounds in a 68-65 overtime thriller. He averaged 21 points, 11 rebounds and four assists on the year. Verbally committed to Wake Forest, Skeen received 12 of the possible 18 votes.

Rashanda McCants, who is bringing her game to the University of North Carolina next season, ended her senior season with 20.6 points, 7.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game average. She received 10 of the possible 18 votes for the honor.

Coaches Jimmy Cleaveland of Canton Pisgah and Sandra Langley Southwest Edgecombe claimed North Carolina AP Coach of the Year honors in boys and girls basketball, respectively. Both coaches led their teams to championship titles.
