Deacon Staff Gets Head Start In '07

Unintentionally, the Demon Deacons' coaching staff got a jump on a target for the class of 2007. That target – Avyd Baldwin – was a 2006 target until his transfer to Asheville (N.C.) Christ School, which forced a reclassified to junior status due to academic problems.

Avyd Baldwin, a 6-foot-1, 170-pound wide receiver, recently informed the Wake Forest coaching staff of his intentions.

"I addressed the situation to Wake Forest," said Baldwin. "My recruiting coach Jeff Mullen said it would be a good thing to do the whole reclassifying thing."

The reclassifying gives the Deacons over a year and a half to land a verbal commitment from Baldwin, who currently claims Wake Forest as his leader. "I want to major in Dentistry," said Baldwin. "That put UNC and Louisville on the top of my list, but after I visited Wake Forest, they rose to the top."

Baldwin attended a spring practice in Winston-Salem and was in attendance for Wake Forest's spring game. During both visits Baldwin was really impressed with the campus and had plenty of opportunities to speak to the coaching staff.

"I really liked both visits," said Baldwin. "My recruiting coach – Jeff Mullen – he just told me that he saw my film and that he likes my hands."

Despite playing in a run oriented offense, Baldwin still earned All-Area and All-Conference honors for his play at wide receiver. At Christ School he will be moved to quarterback and reunite with younger brother J.B.
