Wake Forest got off to a fast start in Friday night's contest with Paul Hewitt's Yellow Jackets, taking a 17 point lead at the half at 52-35.
Georgia Tech would not fade away, however, as Tony Akins led the Jackets back yet again. Akins scored 22 points, dished seven assists, and had four steals in bringing Tech back to make the game close down the stretch.
When the Deacs got into major foul trouble with big men Antwan Scott and Vytas Danelius fouling out and Broderick Hicks and Darius Songaila saddled with four fouls with minutes left on the clock, Deacon fans had reason to worry.
Darius Songaila and company had too much for the young Jackets down the stretch, however, pulling away for the nine point win.
Georgia Tech was led by the senior Akins with 22 points, sophomore Clarence Moore who added 17, and freshman Isma'il Muhammad who finished with 16 on the night. With the loss, the Jackets' season ends with a 15-16 record overall.
Meanwhile, the Deacons advance to the ACC Tournament semifinal game Saturday against the Duke Blue Devils. Duke took down UNC 60-48 in their quarterfinal match-up Friday night.
Tipoff for Wake Forest and Duke is set for 4:00 p.m. EST.
