Practice Notes: August 10th
The following are notes from Wednesday night's practice:
The night session started out with position drills with each player working in their individual position stations. It also included punt returns, kickoff returns, and offense vs. defense.
Jon Abbate sat out the practice on Wednesday with a hamstring injury. The 5'11, 245-pound linebacker told DeaconSports he was unhappy about missing the first day of contact but hopes to be back by Friday or Saturday. He also mentioned that he was thrilled that Zach MacDowall committed to Wake and expects him to be a very good quarterback down the road.
Along with Abbate, several others sat out including Kenny Moore, Delon Lowe, Kevin Marion, and John Finklea. L.J. Flintall is also having trouble with an injured toe. Ted Randolph is experiencing shoulder problems and has had an MRI but everything looks ok and he is practicing with the team. Matt Robinson injured his arm in practice but is expected to be ok as well.
Kenny Moore says he will be back from his shoulder injury and ready to go in a week or two. Stay tuned to DeaconSports for more on Moore.
Offensive lineman Louis Frazier looked impressive in the snaps he took on Wednesday. He has filled out well and may help provide quality depth on the OL this year. Chris DeGeare is also coming on strong and expects to play 30-40 snaps per game.
As we reported previously, it looks like Benjamin Mauk has pretty much sealed up the #1 spot at quarterback. Cory Randolph continues to take many of his snaps at wide receiver. Freshman Riley Skinner has been very impressive as well and has a cannon for an arm.
Chris Davis stepped up in offense vs. defense early in the practice and made a couple of nice catches after teammates struggled catching the ball earlier in the practice.
Once he was excused from practice as his work was over, it was good redshirt sophomore Aaron Mason stay a little later and take it upon himself to work on fielding punts.
Returning kickoffs in practice were Travo Woods and Kerry Major. Watch one return from Woods and you can tell he has major speed. Riley Swanson, Alphonso Smith, and Willie Idlette were among the players fielding punts.
Wake Forest will go through two practices on Thursday. Also, the Deacs will host Fan Fest Friday night in Winston-Salem. Saturday morning is a scrimmage at Groves Stadium.
