Crawford's List Expands

Available big men are few and far between. Bigs who can stroke it? Well, there are but of few of them out there. Casey Crawford is one of those guys.

Casey Crawford, Blue Valley North's 6-foot-8 power forward, is a veteran of the recruiting game. Last fall, Crawford was close to ending his recruitment but a situation came up and a potential commitment to West Virginia fell by the wayside.

Basically, Crawford missed his window with the Mountaineers. "I was going to sign with West Virginia but they took another guy because I waited too long," Crawford said. "It upset me in the beginning but I have to move on and deal with what I have now. It would have been a good fit but it wasn't supposed to be."

Crawford learned that, especially at this time of the year, if a great situation comes up, he won't let it pass him by. In the meantime, as he searches for the right school, suitors keep coming to see him.

Southern Cal was in to see him this week. Wake Forest has stopped by and the Baylor Bears will be in town next week. Missouri has offered him, Purdue is getting back in, Virginia is looking and Providence would like him to visit.

"I have a bunch of teams coming in; it's totally different than what it used to be."

With all the interest from a number of directions, Crawford is still analyzing the data. "I'm not sure about visitations. I've been so busy with basketball right now it's been real hard. I'm not positive on who I'm going to visit. A new school will come in every week and want me to visit. I'm going to get through the season and see what happens."

Crawford's AAU coach, L.J. Goolsby, sees a lot of value in his forward's game. "The thing that Casey brings to the table is his skill set," Goolsby said. "He's 6-foot-9 and he's got the ability to shoot the ball. He's got good footwork on the block and if he continues to show that he's more aggressive … the sky is the limit for him. He's got to go to a place that allows bigs to step out and shoot on the perimeter and also score on the block."

All the big fella wants is a chance to earn his opportunities. "Important to me is that I want to go to school and be comfortable and have the opportunity to play. I know I have to prove myself but I want that opportunity."

He'll get that chance next fall. Where? That's to be determined.
