Baseball Falls To Richmond, 7-5, In NCAA Regional

Richmond downs WFU in the NCAA baseball tournament to end the Demon Deacons' season.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Led by junior Vito Chiaravalloti's 2-5 and four RBI day at the plate and a stellar pitching performance from sophomore Matt McLoughlin, the University of Richmond earned its first ever NCAA Tournament Regional championship with a 7-5 win against Wake Forest in the final game of the Winston-Salem Regional.

Heading into the final day, top-seeded Wake Forest (47-13-1) had to beat Richmond (52-11) twice to capture the regional. The Demon Deacons suceeded in the first game, 5-4, in 10 innings, but fell behind 6-0 after two innings in the second game. Chiaravalloti belted a three-run double into the left center gap to highlight a four-run first.

After scoring two more in the second, Richmond starter Tim Rice allowed his first run in the third. The Demon Deacons added three more in the fifth to close the game to 6-4. With the momentum in the home team's dugout, Chiaravalloti put the Spiders on his back when he belted an opposite field home run off the scoreboard in right center.

McLoughlin kept Wake Forest off balance all night, allowing one run on three hits in 4.2 innings. The one run came with one out in the ninth when Jamie D'Antona belted a home run to right center. McLoughlin settled and retired Brad Scioletti on a ground out and struck out Jeff Ruziecki to end the game.

McLoughlin improved to 5-1 on the season while Wake's Brian Bach fell to 6-2 with the loss. The freshman starter surrendered six runs on five hits in 2.0 innings.

Sophomore Bryan Pritz and junior David Reaver both collected two hits for the Spiders. Pritz also scored two runs while Reaver scored one and knocked in a run. Right fielder Ryan Johnson went 1-4 with three RBI and D'Antona went 2-3 with two runs and one RBI to lead the Demon Deacons.
