TOC: Wake Targets Day I

Friday evening was Day I of the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions in the Triangle area of North Carolina. The following is a recap of a host Deacon prospects' nights notes on their recruitment and schools of interest.

• Illinois Wolves prospects Evan Turner and Demetri McCamey both played fairly well Friday night. McCamey showed great strength and it's tough to stop the 6'3, 210-pound bull from getting where he wants to go. Though Turner was unhappy with his Friday performance, he did show that he had many of the physical tools needed to be a high major prospect that has earned a host of early offers.

Dominique Sutton didn't have his best performance of the spring. Sutton, who is still highly interested in Wake, hopes to perform better in his Saturday showdowns.

• Wake Forest has shown interest in forward Matt Howard and the Deacs are at least getting a look. However, at this point, Howard notes that he would like to stick closer to home.

Johnny Thomas out of Greensboro has added offers from Miami and George Washington in the past month. Thomas' game is quite interesting. In tonight's contest, we saw him drop in over a dozen points, though mostly on dunks and putbacks. Thomas has played in the post for most of his life, but is making the transition to the SG/SF position. He has a long ways to go, but he's got a body that's ready for the college game and athleticism on top of that. He just needs to prove to more folks that he can play the small forward or shooting guard position at the next level. Wake's showing interest, but we don't expect an offer anytime soon.

• Fellow North Carolina Gater Ty Walker, a 2008 prospect with heavy interest from the likes of Wake Forest and North Carolina, played sparingly on Friday. Walker lacks the confidence needed to play at such a high level at this point. He obviously has the tools to become a high-major player but must develop his mental game and confidence in order to realize his talent.

J.J. Hickson was featured in the Atlanta Celtics' contest against the Carolina Celtics. Hickson never found a real groove in this contest but was able to muster up some points on a few open dunks. Hickson struggled to find his shot at the free throw line and didn't dominate the game as one would expect. At this point, there is nothing new in his recruitment – he'll narrow his list down in a month or so.

• With each individual we talk to, the news on '06 signee Ish Smith is more and more positive. Tonight, several members of the Greensboro Gaters organization in addition to Ish Smith organization raved on and on about Smith, his floor game, and his shooting. Deacon fans should be excited about this point guard joining the fold this upcoming season.

• Speaking of Deacon guards, Chris Paul was at the tournament on Friday.
