ACC Championship: Game Notes

Game notes from Saturday's ACC Championship showdown in Jacksonville. The Deacs defeated Georgia Tech 9-6 Saturday to win their second ever ACC title.

• The captains for Saturday's game for Georgia Tech were Calvin Johnson, Joe Annai, and Reggie Ball. Wake Forest's captains were Steve Vallos and Josh Gattis. Georgia Tech won the toss and elected to receive.

• Wake Forest came out in white tops and gold pants Saturday. Meanwhile, Tech pulled out the blue jerseys from their closet. Saturday was the first time since 1994 that they wore blue tops.

• Arby Jones returned to the starting lineup on Saturday, starting at offensive tackle.

• Wake Forest's offense came out slow Saturday in Jacksonville. The Deacs netted just 20 first quarter yards including -6 rushing.

• Wake Forest's do-everything player Kenny Moore added another notch to his belt. The punter return man/running back/receiver opened the second quarter at quarterback, handing off to Kevin Marion for a 5-yard gain. Moore returned at quarterback later in the 2nd quarter, helping the Deacs drive for their first points of the game.

• Aaron Curry picked off his 1st career pass of the season when he intercepted Reggie Ball on 4th & 8 in the second quarter. He returned the interception 30-yards to the 44-yard line. That was also Wake's 22nd pick-off of the year. Riley Swanson added another to that total in the fourth quarter.

• With 7:37 left in the second quarter, Sam Swank missed his 7th kick of the season, missing a 44-yard field goal wide left. He added a 19-yard field goal in the second quarter to He added a 19-yard field goal, 33-yard field goal and a 22-yard field goal later in the game to improve to 21-28 on the year.

• Wake Forest remained efficient on 4th down, picking up a 4th down conversion in the 2nd quarter. The Deacs are now 4-6 this season on 4th down, tops in the ACC.

• Wake Forest and Georgia Tech's 3-3 score at half ties the record for the lowest scoring and highest scoring first halves in ACC Championship history. Florida State and Virginia Tech were tied 3-3 at halftime in the inaugural ACC Football Championship.

• At halftime, Wake Forest picked up 113 total yards while Tech had 134-yards of total offense.

• With his performance against the Yellow Jackets, Jon Abbate surpassed the 100-tackle for the 2nd time in his college career.

• After upholding the spot on John Tereshinski's 18-yard reception, all five challenges in ACC Championship game history have now been upheld • Two Deacons set career longs in terms of receptions. John Tereshinski caught a 39-yard pass while Mike Rinfrette caught a pass for 18-yards.

• 62,850 tickets were distributed for Saturday's ACC Championship.

• Wake Forest is now 6-0 in games decided by eight points or less. The Deacons are also now 7-0 in games away from home.
