Wright: Another Diamond In The Rough?

In recent years, Wake Forest's football program has made a living off of under recruited athletes. Players such as Chris Barclay, Jon Abbate, and Boo Robinson both lacked big-time D-I offers and have turned out to be impressive players at Wake Forest. Wake Forest hopes Wilmington (NC) Hoggard jumbo athlete Will Wright will follow in the same mold.

The recruitment of 6'5, 228-pound jumbo athlete Will Wright was relatively low-key. Although smaller colleges were after Wright, just two major D-I schools showed legit interest in him. Both South Carolina and Wake Forest courted Wright before his commitment.

"Wake sent me an invitation to come to an elite camp in the summer with the quarterback [Brandon Miley] from our football team and we went to the camp, I took a tour and really liked it it. It was letters through the first stage of recruiting, showing they were interested in me and me interested in them. We had a few games and I sent some film and they got interested."

After sending the Wake coaching staff game film, Wright earned his first offer. "On October 31st, they offered me a scholarship and that night I accepted. I had talked to my parents already and knew when they offered I would accept."

"I really liked the place, Coach Grobe and the rest of the staff," said Wright, who plans to play defensive end at Wake Forest.

In 2006, Wright helped lead Hoggard High to a 12-1 record. He also plays basketball for his high school. Wright has already qualified academically.
