WFU In Looney's Top Five

Offensive lineman Joe Looney would have to be considered one of the top offensive line targets for Wake in recent years, and it's looking like the Deacs might have a real shot at landing him.

"My top five is Rutgers, USF, Wake, West Virginia and Louisville," Joe Looney told DeaconSports.com. "They're all even right now. There are things I like about each school. "With Wake, they just offered me about two weeks ago, so it's still sort of new with them. Coach Ray McCartney is recruiting me and I am actually really interested in them. One of our guys, Brandon Pendergrass, just signed with them last year and I would love to play with him. They're coming off a great season, so I'm very interested.

"At Rutgers, I love the facilities and the coaches. The coaches at West Virginia are real cool too. I haven't been to their campus, but I'd love to see it. I want to learn more about them.

"My dad played at Louisville back in the late 70's, and I've got some family up there, so that's nice. He's told me to make my own decision though. South Florida is a school that's real close to home so my parents could watch me play. They have a good staff too."

At 6-4 and 312 pounds, all of those schools are recruiting Looney to play offensive guard. He said he is about to enter his 14th season of organized football, so he is not lacking in experience.

"I'm real tough and I pull really good," he said. "I've got the strength to overpower people, so I get a lot of pancakes. I'm really looking forward to this season. We were 4-6 last year but we lost three games by one point and we have 20 seniors coming back. We should be good."

Looney has already visited Rutgers and is planning on going to South Florida this weekend. He will visit Wake Forest in July. He said his top five will not change and that those are the schools he plans on taking official visits to. He hopes to announce his decision in August.
