DeaconSports Update: Women's Soccer

The Deacons are certainly off to a strong start. Wake Forest's women's soccer earned yet another victory Friday night, defeating Maryland 3-1 to move to 8-0 on the season.

Since the inception of Wake Forest women's soccer in 1994, the Deacons have never been off to a better start than they are this year. The team, who started the year well out of the top ten, has steadily risen in the polls and is currently ranked eighth and will most likely climb when the new ranking is released Monday.

On Friday night Wake Forest began ACC play against Maryland. The Terrapins, 4-2 on the year hung in with the Deacons for awhile, but in the end Wake Forest proved why they have earned a top ten ranking, scoring two goals in the second half to win the game.

The Demon Deacon's Katherine Winstead scored in the first half to take an early 1-0 lead. Just before halftime however, Maryland came back with a goal to tie the game 1-1. In the second half Wake Forest received another goal by Katherine Winsted and later Melanie Schneider found the back of the net giving the Deacs a 3-1 lead.
