At 5-10 and 180-pounds, Jones runs the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds and was one of the top players at Belleville, N.J. last fall. He'll carry more of a load this season, and with his versatility that shouldn't be a problem.
"He's just a very aggressive, athletic player," said Belleview coach Joe Fischer. "He was recently at a combine in New Jersey and he had the fastest 40-time there. He's had the best long jump at a couple of places too. His vertical is great – I think it's 35 inches. Athletically, he just has the total package."
That has been enough to score him offers from Wake Forest, Boston College, Temple and Akron, as well as interest from schools like Syracuse and Maryland. While he probably won't make his decision until after he has taken all five of his official visits, Fischer believes in the end it will come down to two schools.
"I know Maurice really wants to go down south for college," he said. "I think it will come down to Wake and Maryland. I'm pretty sure those two are his leaders right now. He's originally from North Carolina so I think that probably has something to do with it.
"He's already been to camps at Temple and Boston College, and he's going to Maryland here pretty shortly. Wake has been recruiting him for about a month or a month and a half, and he's showing a lot of interest in them. He's going to take his visits but I expect he'll choose one of those two schools."
Jones is being recruited as a defensive back, but coaches have not specified whether he will play cornerback or safety.
