Sophomore Andre Dawkins and his teammates at Atlantic Shores Christian School are having quite a year. "We are playing in real well this season. We let a couple slip that we should have won but we are 27-6 and getting ready for our conference championship game today and the state playoffs next week," said Dawkins when we spoke to him this past weekend.
The sweet shooting Dawkins has played a huge role in his teams success thus far. He is averaging 24 points and 7 rebounds per game. But don't let his numbers fool you, Dawkins is still working hard on his game.
"I think I started the season off well then hit a bit of a slump but I am back on track now," he said. "I am really working on my quickness and ball handling. I want to have a quicker first step." Dawkins is also a very cerebral player that focuses on the little aspects of his game. "I really want to improve on attacking the pressure defenses. I also use my shooting ability to draw a defense out on me and that open up the lane for drives."
Although just a sophomore, Dawkins is getting a lot of high major attention as well as some offers. "I have offers from Maryland, Clemson, and Old Dominion," he said. "Maryland has been to three of my games and so has Georgetown. I am also getting a lot of interest from Wake Forest and they were at my game yesterday," said Dawkins.
Dawkins was also in the house to see the Deacons knock off Duke recently. "I was able to go to the Wake/Duke game last Sunday and had a great time. I really loved their gym and the intense fans as well as their coaching staff and style of play," said Dawkins. "think their fans gave Wake an edge."
It is known that Dawkins grew up a Duke fan, but that is not something he is going to let affect his college decision. "I grew up a Duke fan but that is something that gets thrown out the window as far as my recruitment goes. I am not going to jump on any offer. I am doing my homework and watching a lot of games to see how I would fit in at a school. I am also looking at what type of recruiting classes a team is bring in as well," stated Dawkins. He also mentioned he was familiar with the talented big men Wake was bringing in for 2008.
Dawkins claims no favorite at this time and will take his time on making a college choice. He will be in attendance for the uncoming Duke/UNC contest and will play for the Boo Williams 16-17s this summer.
