Rocky Mount OL Earns Offers

One of North Carolina's top offensive line prospects recently picked up his second offer and it comes from another in-state program. He's also ready to name his two favorites.

Whit Barnes, a 6-4, 270 pound center from Rocky Mount, N.C., received a scholarship offer from Wake Forest last week.

"That was last Wednesday," Barnes said earlier this week. "My recruiting coordinator called my head coach and he called me into his office and congratulated me. They wanted me to call them back, so during my lunch break and I did and talked to (Coach Russ) and Coach Lobo. They said this was an official offer and they were really excited about me. They said they needed a center.

"I'm going to be going up there on Wednesday. I've heard a lot about the family atmosphere and everything. I kind of like that it's a smaller college. The academics are really good at Wake Forest and they're obviously one of the best teams in the ACC."

Wake Forest won't be the only school Barnes visits. He also plans on camping at North Carolina, NC State, Duke, South Carolina and perhaps Maryland. Thus far Wake Forest and Duke are the only two schools that have offered, but more could be on the way if he excels this summer.

Barnes told that he currently has two favorites. "I'd say North Carolina and Wake are probably my top two and then Duke's right there (after them)," he explained. "I've been going to games (at UNC) all my life and both my parents went there."

Barnes cited his aggressiveness and his willingness to play until the whistle as his greatest assets. He runs the 40 yard dash in 5.3 seconds and bench presses 315 pounds. Barnes said he does not have a timetable for making his decision.
