Newman, who had previously earned offers from Rice, UAB, Furman, South Alabama, and other schools, was hoping for an offer from Wake Forest. When he heard word that the Demon Deacons had decided to offer, he knew that he would likely commit to the Wake Forest program. First, he wanted to make a trip to Winston-Salem to visit the coaches and confirm that he wanted to be a Demon Deacon.
"I knew they couldn't just set up the visit for me because of the NCAA period so I got time this weekend and drove up to Wake. We went up and had about a two hour meeting with Coach Grobe and talked to him a lot. I told him [I was committing] and he gave me a big hug. I like the coaches a lot and it was a great visit."
The commitment from Newman put an exclamation point on Wake Forest's recruitment of the 6'2 kicker. "They started recruiting me around September or October. Soon after my last game of high school, [Wake Forest's] Coach Mitchell came and saw me kick. He was evaluating the kickers and he had a few that were his favorites. People were telling me that he wouldn't let me know too but I liked him a lot. Later, he told me it was looking good and a week or two later he offered."
Once the offer was on the table and Newman was able to see the campus, it was a fairly easy decision. "We went and looked around the campus and we were talking about the academics," he noted. "It was a real beautiful campus and I like the city a lot. It wasn't huge but it was big enough. I like the facilities and the stadium and I can't say enough about Coach Grobe and Coach Mitchell. Coach Grobe is a good Christian man and I like that a lot. When I talked to him today, I felt that was the right place."
Newman, who will enroll at Wake Forest for the second semester of summer school, will get a shot at some of the kicking duties next year. "Coach Grobe said I would have a good chance at playing next year," Newman said. "He said he didn't think they would redshirt me. He said they need a kickoff guy and I could challenge for the spot next year. Hopefully I'll work hard and be ready."
Newman will take his official visit to Wake Forest on the 17th and 18th of this month.
