Whitlock Talks Wake

DeaconSports caught up with the newest member of the '09 football class, Texas 5A Defensive Player of the Year Nikita Whitlock.

The road had not been easy for Nikita Whitlock but the destination is pretty sweet. After a sensational senior season in which Whitlock had 165 tackles, 15 sacks, 25 tackles for loss, blocked numerous kicks, and was named the Texas 5A Defensive Player of the Year, he was still being under recruited. All of that changed Sunday night.

"I got an offer from Wake and committed to them last night," said Whitlock. "It just feels great. It's like I told my coach, it feels like my hard work has paid off. I never doubted a big offer would come. I just prayed about it and put it in God's hands. All I can say is it is just a tribute to my hard work."

When asked to describe his game, Whitlock had a short and sweet answer. "I'm just a 5'10 football player. I have been told I have an unbelievable motor. I just go non-stop all the time."

Whitlock will be asked to move from nose guard to middle linebacker at Wake. This is a change he welcomes. "I have always wanted to play middle linebacker," he said. "I played middle linebacker and fullback in middle school but when I got to high school the team needed me on the defensive line because of my strength. I did what I needed to do for my team and played nose guard. I may be a little rusty at middle linebacker for a bit but I am very comfortable playing there."

Whitlock plans to bring a simple philosophy with him to Wake Forest. "I want the fans to know I am going to bring hard work to the team. I can't promise I will have 165 tackles or 15 sacks in a season, but I can promise I will work hard every day and help the team win ball games."

Whitlock will make his first visit to Winston-Salem this weekend for his official visit.

He will also play in the prestigious Texas vs. Oklahoma Oil Bowl this summer.
