Postgame Notes: Georgia Tech

Notes from Wake Forest's win over Georgia Tech Wednesday night in Winston-Salem. Wake Forest won 87-69 behind a big 24 point, 11 rebound performance by James Johnson. Coach Gaudio, Ish Smith, and Al-Farouq Aminu discuss the game with DeaconSports.

Coach Gaudio:
"Our guys came out with a lot of energy and emotion. It meant a little bit more to them. I know driving down I-85 the last time we played them that those guys in the back of the bus were really down. We reminded [them] of that. It was a really good win. We weren't pressuring the ball enough in the first half . We had to press up on Shumpert and Clinch. We made the adjustment at halftime."

On Guarding without fouling:
"We have been emphasizing in practice guarding without fouling. In games where we attempt more free throws than our opponents we are 18-0. Also, Dinger informed me when we score more than our opponents we are 2-0 (laughing). In the second half we had 4 teams fouls. We need to guard without fouling and we did that."

Al-Farouq Aminu
Does it feel good to beat big brother?
"Yes it does. Very good. It feels good to get 20 wins and even better that I was able to beat my brother."

How do you feel you played tonight?
"I don't think I did too good in the first half. Some games you don't play so well on offense but have to keep up the intensity on rebounding and defense and I think I did that. I think I played ok."

Talk about how Ish played tonight. It looked like he gave the team a spark.
"He did. He came in and led the team and that's what he is able to do. You can tell he is 100% back."

Ish Smith
"I guess you can say I finally had two consistent games back to back (laughing). I remember last year I hit some big shots and I know a lot of people say "He can distribute the ball but can he score?". I just do whatever I need to for the team an try to have balance in my game."

On getting out to the big lead...
"We knew it was not going to be easy. Georgia Tech is a well coached hard playing team and we knew we weren't going to just run through them. Our team showed some resiliency when they cut the lead to five."

On the play of James Johnson...
"He has got us off to good starts in the last two games. He is doing a great job and Jeff is doing what he does."
