Wake #1 For James

The first word that comes to mind when you see Matt James is "mismatch." The 6'5, 195 pound receiver from Raleigh, N.C. is a big problem for opposing corners. DeaconSports caught up with James to get his thoughts on recruiting and the Wake Forest program.

Last season, Matt James had a great year. As a junior, accumulated over 650 yards from scrimmage and 12 touchdowns. This offseason, he is working hard on his skills and is ready to have an even better 2009.

"I have been working hard on getting faster," said James. "My 40 time has come down some so I am pleased with that. I am also working hard in the weight room and running the 200 and 400 for our track team. We also have receiver workouts two days a week at school."

James has also been hitting the combine circuit this spring. Last week at the Shrine Bowl combine, James ran a 4.55 forty and had an outstanding 31.5" vertical jump. "I love doing the combines. It gives me a chance to test myself against the best players around. I ran my fastest 40 last week at the Shrine combine."

On the recruiting front, James is hearing from plenty of Division 1 schools. "I think Notre Dame and Kentucky may be close to offering, I also think Tennessee may offer as well. I currently have offers from Wake, Virginia Tech, East Carolina, Air Force, and West Virginia."

Where do the Deacs fit in with James? "I love Wake. They are one of my top schools. The academics at Wake are great and Coach Grobe is doing a great job with the program. Coach Russ actually came by last week. It was good to see him again."

James has the ability to play multiple positions at the next level, but the Wake coaches recently told him he would get a shot at receiver if he were to become a Demon Deacon. "Originally, Wake was talking about playing me at tight end. Last week, they told me I would get a shot at receiver which is exciting. I would like the chance to play receiver at the next level. They said they would try me there and re-evaluate things after my first year to see how things were going."

The Demon Deacons seem to be the team to beat for James at this point in his recruitment. "Right now, with the offers I have, Wake is at the top of my list followed by West Virginia and Virginia Tech."

James stated he will take his time with his recruitment as he would like to take a few official visits before making a commitment.
