Travis McKie Journal -- 7/21/09

Demon Deacon basketball commitment Travis McKie, a 6-6 forward from Richmond, Virginia will keep up regular journal entries at DeaconSports. The following is McKie's third journal entry at DeaconSports.

What's up DeaconSports? This is Travis McKie and here is my third installment of my monthly journal.

NBA Camp was arguably the best camp I went to and had the most talent there this year. I love this camp because it teaches you stuff on and off of the court. It teaches you that being a professional athlete is more than playing basketball, it is a business. In my eyes, I thought I played very well at the camp. Every game was a match-up with another elite small forward and I compete every time I step on the court. Also, I met Tate Myers (catudeac) of DeaconSports for the first time and we had nice conversations about Wake Forest and recruits.

Reebok U was a great experience and was a great time for me. Since this was my first Reebok event, I was unsure what I going to be doing. I played great that camp because I was getting rebounds and was in double figures in every game. I was selected to play in the All-Star game and had 15 points, I think. It was great experience and I would like to thank everyone who had a hand in me participating in the event.

After RBKU, I went straight to Augusta, GA and went to Peach Jam. This is the biggest AAU tournament in the world so doing good in this camp can go a long way. The injury to teammate James McAdoo (torn ligament) has sidelined him for the rest of the summer so we are now forced to play all guards and I play the center. From a team standpoint, we performed below expectations. We finished 2-3 in the pool and were blown out by Team Final in the final game. Obviously, we hold high standards and not making it out of pool play was very disappointing. But I was playing great through the tournament. Up until the last game, I was top 5 in scoring and #1 in rebounding throughout the whole tournament. Playing against the top big men, I more than held my own and hope to increase my stock.

My last two AAU events are the AAU Nationals & the CP3 Backcourt Skills camp in August. I plan to finish out strong before my senior year.

I also read you guys' questions and I will answer some of them. First, I will not be rocking a high top - ever. That will never happen. As for other Wake recruits, J.T. [Terrell,] Tony [Chenault,] and Melvin [Tabbb] have all played well but J.T. has been playing great. He is proving a lot of people wrong and I hope he continues his great play.

The top 2010 player is between Harrison [Barnes,] Brandon [Knight] & Jared [Sullinger] in my opinion. In 2011, there is a strong possibility that we could land Marquis [Rankin,] Quincy [Miller,] and C.J. [Barksdale.] They're only rising juniors so give them time. Also, congrats to J.T. & Quincy for being selected for the Nike Globals. I hope they play well and take advantage of having USA on their chests.
