Champaign and his teammates at Grayson High School are ready to get the 2009 season underway.
"Practice is going very well," said Champaign. "We open up August 22nd against a really good team in Camden County in the Georgia Dome. It is going to be a great test for us. I really like how our team is coming together and we are getting better every day."
Champaign also feels good about where he is in his development. "I feel like I have improved a lot since last season. I have gotten a lot stronger and I am playing a lot faster. I'm getting a lot of reps in practice and just getting better each day."
Champaign feels he has a few attributes that set him apart from other defensive ends. "I believe my best attributes are my motor, effort, and heart. I am always pursuing the ball and will do everything in my power to make the tackle. We have a saying on defense [that] I follow. A defensive play usually lasts around 6 seconds so we want to play those 6 seconds like our hair is on fire. That is what I try to do."
On the recruiting front, Champaign already has plenty of interest and offers at this point. "I have offers from Stanford, BYU, Air Force, Navy, UAB, Marshall, South Alabama, Georgia Southern, and Furman. I also talked with Wake Forest last week. They seem very interested and I hope to take an unofficial to Wake very soon."
Champaign is very focused on his senior season and would like to get his college decision out of the way as soon as possible. "I would like to decide before our season begins. I would like to get that decision off my shoulders as soon as I can."
