Deacons Interested In Virginia DT

Junior defensive tackle Alston Smith from Huguenot High School in Richmond is already seeing interest from many of the top schools throughout the nation. At 6-2, 275 pounds, Smith will be one of the better defensive prospects in the state this season.

"Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina State, Penn State, Ohio State, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, Michigan, and some others I can't remember" are the schools that have shown interest in Richmond product Alston Smith early on.

Smith, who averaged 13 tackles a game this past season, tells DeaconSports that he is wide open early on in the recruiting process. "I don't really have a favorite or anything," Smith noted, "and it doesn't really matter whether I stay around [Virginia] to me. I'm interested in anyone who is interested in me."

What is Smith looking for in the college of his choice?

"First, I'm looking for the graduation rate of athletes and what the school has to offer as far as a major and what courses they offer," Smith said. "I also want to see how many players are playing pro football, NFL. Stuff like that, really."

Smith, who claims to bench 415, notes that he has a busy summer of camps ahead. "I'm going to be at a lot of camps," Smith said. "I don't know what camps I'm going to, but my team camp is at Penn State. I'll probably go to the NIKE Camp at Virginia Tech, too."
