Talented FL QB Likes Wake

High school quarterbacks receive more intense scrutiny than players at any other position yet there seems to be a consensus on Kevin Sousa. Colleges around the country are all over the 6'4 gunslinger. DeaconSports spoke with Sousa this week regarding his recruitment.

College coaches seem to agree that the 6-4, 235-pound quarterback from Orlando (FL) Lake Nona can flat out play. Sousa has excellent size for a high school quarterback, good athleticism and plenty of potential as a passer. He's also a good student. Perhaps most impressively is the fact that he has only been playing football for two seasons, so the sky is the limit.

Not surprisingly, Wake Forest is highly interested in Kevin Sousa. The Deacs have had plenty of success recruiting the Sunshine State in recent years and they're hoping that Sousa will continue the trend of talented Floridians heading north.

"Coach (Tom) Elrod, the quarterbacks coach, is the one recruiting me," Sousa told DeaconSports. "I call him every week. He is very excited about me and thinks I have a lot of upside. He was at my spring game and offered me that night after watching me play.

"He said I'm one of three quarterbacks they've offered and he thinks I might have the most upside since I've only been playing football for two years. Coach Paradiso, my quarterbacks coach and mentor, thinks it might be a good fit. We've done a little research and know that it's a great place to get a degree from.

"Coach Elrod also seems like an individual who can continue to help me develop like coach Paradiso has done for the past two years, so there is a genuine interest."

Coach Paradiso is an individual that wields a lot of influence with Sousa, and rightfully so. Just a couple of years ago Sousa was a talented athlete, but his mentor has helped mold him into a top-flight quarterback prospect.

"Coach Paradiso advises me because without him I wouldn't be in this position. He influence me to play and he has guided me and trained me into the player I currently am," Sousa said. "I have a lot of respect and trust in him so he will have the biggest say as to where I end up.

"Right now coach Paradiso and I are going to look at (which) five or six schools fit me the best and make trips to sit down with the quarterbacks coaches, coordinators and academic advisers and learn more about those schools."

They will be doing that in the near future, just after school is finished next week. Though Sousa isn't entirely sure what he will be doing this summer the quarterbacks coach from Florida wants him to attend a one-day quarterback camp so he can watch him throw. Florida has told Sousa they are signing two quarterbacks this year and he will be under evaluation. He will be in Gainesville on June 16th and then they will make further plans.
