VA Athlete A Versatile Prospect

Sometimes in recruiting, versatile can also mean a prospect is a ‘tweener and it's not always clear how they will fit in when they join a college team. Not so for one Virginia athlete.

For Michael Cole, the word versatility is a compliment to his varied talents and ability to line up at several spots. Cole told DeaconSports that the top schools on his list are recruiting him to play different positions, and that's okay with him.

"Basically I've heard everyone wants me to play defense. Duke and Penn State, I think, want me to play more of a safety position, while (Virginia) Tech and UVa would line me to play as more of a weak side linebacker. Wake Forest said they'd like me to play inside linebacker. It kind of ranges from linebacker to safety within all of them."

Cole pointed out that the important thing is that he has a chance to see the field and help his future team win games. He does, however, feel more comfortable at one position in particular.

"I play safety in high school now so that's kind of the position I'm leaning towards," he admitted. "It wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing to (play linebacker) though."

Of the five schools Cole mentioned it seems as though Wake Forest has as good a shot as any of the others. Cole had nothing but good things to say about the Demon Deacons early this week.

"They're pretty high on my list," Cole said referring to Wake. "The four or five schools I've listed are the four or five I've got in mind for the most part. I talked to (Wake's) linebackers coach a couple of weeks ago and he seemed pretty interested. He saw my film and I might be hearing from him soon. He just wanted me to come down to camp. They're high on my list as well as the others."

While Cole appears to be a great fit for Wake Forest that's ultimately the coaches' decision and one they will make in the near future, apparently. Cole wants to make his decision before too long so Wake Forest will decide whether to offer soon as well.

"I'm going to plan on making my decision around the end of June or maybe July. I want to get it over with after I go visit them all again and go to their camps. I want to meet with the coaches and get a feel for everything first, but I do want to make the decision soon just so I can focus on my senior season of high school football."

In all, the 6-3, 200-pound safety from Roanoke (VA) Cave Spring sports offers from Virginia Tech, Duke, VMI and Ohio, with all of the others on his list showing serious interest.
