April Is Tournament Time!

The spring traveling team season for high school basketball prospects is just 35 days away. Here's a look at the first AAU event of the spring and also a handful of sanctioned April events.

Boo Williams Invitational – April 11-13 – Hampton, Va.

  • Former St. Joseph's standout Boo Williams' event is almost a rite of passage in getting the spring season kicked off. The event, though not sanctioned for college coaches to attend, is always one of the most competitive and hotly contested events of the year. Typically features the best Nike-sponsored teams in the country. www.hoopsfuture.com

Las Vegas Easter Classic – April 16-20 – Las Vegas

  • The event is held at various Vegas high schools and at the UNLV Annex. You can expect to see kids from various age groups – as young as 10 and under and as old as 17 and under. The event is sanctioned for college coaches to attend. www.visionsports.com

adidas Texas Classic – April 18-20 – Houston, Tex.

  • Head to Pearland High and you'll be able to see many of the very best adidas-sponsored traveling teams. Tournament director John Eurey has his event sanctioned for the college coaches for the second straight season. Last year, Brandon Bass made a big splash here. A coaching clinic with a few big timers starts things on the 17th. www.houstonsuperstar.com

Tops In Texas – April 18-19 – Austin, Tex.

  • Mike Kunstadt has his two-day event sanctioned for college coaches. Non-Division I recruiters can watch both days and Division I assistants can come on the 19th. The event will feature 45 top unsigned seniors and 20 underclassman traveling teams. It's an invite only event and it takes place on the campus of the University of Texas. www.TexasHoops.com

Houston Kingwood Classic – April 25-27 – Houston, Tex.

  • Hal Pastner's event is extremely well run and features a plethora of top Nike teams to go with a mixture of national and local squads. It is a certified event for college coaches. "The nice thing about this for coaches is that they can also see the top 15s and 16s around the country," Pastner said. Vakeaton Wafer got his start at this event last year. www.visionsports.com

Charlie Weber Invitational – April 25-27 – Washington, D.C.

  • Veteran tournament director Charlie Weber's spring event is also certified for college coaches to attend. Weber generally lures the top area teams to his event and mixes in pockets of teams from up and down the East Coast with the occasional power traveling team in the mix. This event takes place on the campus of American University. www.charlieweberbasketball.com

Pump ‘n Run Easter Classic – April 25-27 – Las Vegas

  • David and Dana Pump always put on terrific events out west. The 64-team Easter weekend event has been sanctioned for college coaches to attend. Expect many top west coast traveling teams to participate along with a mixture of shoe sponsored teams. The event is held at Las Vegas' Valley High School. www.doublepump.com
