8 Cougars named honorable mention all-Pac-10

SO WHAT DOES a guy have to do around here to be named Offensive Freshman of the Year in the Pac-10? Apparently, playing in Los Angeles is a big help. Eight Cougars were named honorable mention in the All Pac-10 team released today. The big surprise was Cougar WR Marquess Wilson losing out to Robert Woods of USC for top frosh offensive honors.

Wilson this season had 55 receptions in 12 games for 1,006 yards and six touchdowns. He averaged 18.29 yards per catch. He averaged 83.8 yards per game.

With the benefit of one more game, Woods had 786 receiving yards on 64 catches in 13 contests. He averaged 12.28 ypc, and 60.5 receiving yards a game.

The numbers don't really compare. Yet the Pac-10 coaches chose Woods for the offensive freshman of the year honor over Wilson.

The official press release by the Pac-10 made a special point of highlighting Woods' special teams contributions, leading some to wonder why special teams marks would be included in an offensive award. But at least the Pac-10 made up for it by misspelling Jared Karstetter's name in their release.

No Cougars were selected to the first or second teams. Eight Cougars were named honorable mention -- P Reid Forrest, Sr.; OL B.J. Guerra, Jr.; WR Jared Karstetter, Jr.; DE Travis Long, So.; DB Tyree Toomer, So.; QB Jeff Tuel, So.; OL Zack Williams, Sr.; WR Marquess Wilson, Fr.
