Northwest QB has four on lockdown

FOR ALEX MATTHEWS, brother of Cougar Jay Matthews, getting out to schools is a necessity because he doesn't have a ton of 2010 junior film available. He plans on camping at Washington State.

"Things are going well," the Alex Matthews 6-foot-2.5, 206-pound quarterback from Lake Oswego, Ore. told during the Barton Football 2011 Washington Marketing Workout. "Recruiting was slow, but things are picking up. I know it's going to turn out well."

It turned out well for his older brother, current Washington State Cougar safety Jay Matthews, and Alex knows that if gets to colleges during the summer camping sessions, he'll turn heads.

Watching him work out Saturday at Pop Keeney Stadium, Matthews looks and carries himself a lot like former Skyline and current BYU star Jake Heaps. In many ways, he even throws like him.

Colorado, Utah, Washington State, Stanford, and Oregon State are schools that have been targeted by Matthews, and he'll be camping at those programs in the hopes of earning a scholarship offer. He will be on the Farm this weekend, taking part in the Stanford Nike Camp and also the Elite 11 workout.

The Cardinal might be a nice fit for Matthews, as he currently carries a 3.97 GPA. "I've already taken the SAT, and I scored a 1910," he said. "I'm taking it again in two weeks. I'm going for 2000."

Of the five camp targets, Matthews said he's liking all of them a lot, but the out-of-state schools are catching his attention just a little more. A couple of them could be on the verge of offering, according to Matthews, and a solid camp appearance just might make the difference.
