HOOPS: As expected, Winston leaves WSU

IN A MOVE widely forecast even before the season ended, seldom-used freshman point guard Andre Winston has asked for and been given his release from the Washington State basketball team, coach Ken Bone announced today in a statement.

Winston averaged just 6.2 minutes of PT in the 26 (out of 35) games he played this past season, but the vast majority of that time came in the non-conference portion of the season.

"Dré is a great young man and we appreciate the contributions he made to the team this past year," Bone said. "We wish him the best in his basketball career and will help him in any way we can."

Winston is the third player with eligibility remaining who will not be back in 2011-12. Klay Thompson and DeAngelo Casto are eschewing their final seasons to turn pro.

With three incoming recruits -- DaVonté Lacy, Greg Sequele and D.J. Shelton -- the Cougs, less Thompson, Casto and Winston, are now at the 13-player scholarship limit (presuming that Mike Ladd, who redshirted this season after transferring to Wazzu from Fresno State, is set for one this coming season).
