Wulff, Karstetter take stage at media day

TAKING THE PODIUM for the Pac-12 media day on Tuesday were Paul Wulff and Jared Karstetter. The Pac-12 media picks WSU to finish sixth in the Pac-12 North. Wulff, however, sees things playing out differently...

-- Wulff said the Cougs have the chance to surprise a lot of people this season.

-- Wulff said spring ball showed a level of play that hasn't been in evidence the past three seasons since Wulff has been there, and he said he expects to stop the run much better this year. More physical strength, more speed, more game experience are the main reasons for optimism in stopping the run. Just one or two seniors may end up starting on D, he said.

-- Wulff mentioned as players to watch RB Rickey Galvin and WR Kristoff Williams on offense, linebackers Sekope Kaufusi and Alex Hoffman-Ellis on defense. AHE, said Wulff, has the chance to be one of the finer LBs in the conference.

-- Wulff said the reason they brought Karstetter to the media day is that he's the type of guy who is a program changer, one who has been a big influence on changing the WSU program.

-- Wulff said they recruit to their profile and don't care if others view the recruits in the same high regard or not.

-- On the number of sacks last year, Wulff said two JC players in their first year and a true freshman playing on the o-line, and not running the ball well enough, plus a young WR corps all contributed. He said those things have been solved to a high degree. This spring he said they were executing at a much higher clip than they had ever done since Wulff arrived at WSU.

-- Wulff said he sees "an explosive offense" this season at Washington State.

-- Wulff said there is a better supporting cast around Jeff Tuel, and it won't just be Tuel trying to do everything himself.

-- On the assistant coaching changes, Wulff said the addition of veteran coaches have helped, particularly with the younger players. He said he saw changes in the spring out on the field in terms of performance and in player learning and development.
