RECRUITING: Cougs battling UW, Zags for guard

IT'S BEEN WIDELY reported that Washington State and Ken Bone will play host this weekend to a 6-5 guard prospect. CF.C spoke with him recently for his thoughts on all things Cougs and recruiting as he eyes his official visit out to the Palouse.

Demarquise Johnson (6-5, 185), who goes by Q, will take in the sights and sounds of Pullman and the Cougs' football season opener this weekend.

"They said they like that I can shoot and push the floor, just like Klay Thompson did for them," said Johnson.

Indeed, Washington State, Johnson said, has told him they're looking at him as potentially being the next Klay Thompson and doing all the things out on the floor that the Golden State Warriors guard did in his time on the WSU hardcourt.

"But he's in the NBA, so I'd have to work hard to get to his level…It is satisfying that (WSU sees me in that) role," said Johnson, who comes across on the phone as pleasant and humble.

Johnson has offers from WSU, UW, Gonzaga, Oregon State, Missouri and others. He said he plans on taking at least some of his official visits before making his decision.

"If I like a school early, I'll sign early," said Johnson.

While on his trip to Wazzu, Johnson said he's curious to see what pace the Cougs play, and how much he'll connect with the Wazzu coaches now that they'll be face to face.
