Cali playmaker sets WSU visit date

THE JANUARY 13 WEEKEND is shaping up as a good sized recruiting junket for Washington State and Mike Leach. Among the official visitors will be a California wide receiver who is very familiar with one of the Cougars' quarterbacks…

Brett Bartolone (5-10, 180) is from La Habra, the same high school as WSU quarterback Cody Clements.

"If I go there, I would be playing with my friend Cody Clements, and I've been playing football with him all my life," said Bartolone. "After I told him WSU offered, he was home for break then, he came running over to my house right away."

Bartolone said Wazzu is his leader.

He's drawing interest from a number of smaller schools but the chance to play in the Pac-12, and with Clements, is a big draw.

"First off, I like the offense their going to run with Mike Leach -- they like to pass the ball almost every play…they said when they offered they like my explosiveness and quickness, they can use me in the slot but also in different spots around the field. I think I'll have a good idea on (a decision timetable) after my visit to WSU.

BARTOLONE WAS NAMED first team all-county and the Freeway League offensive player of the year his senior season.

He had 50 receptions for 643 yards and eight touchdowns, but also carried the ball plenty of times, too. He rushed for 924 yards with nine touchdowns, averaging 7 yards a carry. He rushed for more than 100 yards twice this season.
