Cosumnes Oaks High prep coach Ryan Gomes needed only six words to describe 2013 prospect Sam Smith (6-4, 265-pound) whom the Cougars have offered.
"Smith is a monster. No brainer," said Gomes.
Gomes says Smith is a natural "three technique" -- the guy responsible for the B gap in a 4-3 scheme, usually lining up on the outside shoulder of the right guard in the three gap, hence the name. But WSU this season is switching their base to a 3-4. Smith's 6-4 frame is conducive to adding bulk and he can develop into a highly effective nose tackle, says Gomes.
Smith has some academic work to do, says Gomes, and he envisions once those issues are cleared up many more offers will come flying in.
In the meantime, his first two offers have come from Washington State and UNLV.
Smith, adds Gomes, has shown the ability to occupy multiple blockers and create lanes of pursuit for others to make the tackle. Exactly what you want in a nose tackle.
Smith as a junior tallied 34 tackles, with 13 for loss, two fumble recoveries and 0.5 sack in eight games.
Strength numbers include a power clean of 255 pounds, a squat of 385, bench of 295 and a 23-inch vertical along with a 5.15 in the 40.
