Cougar fans may be ravenous for information about his trip to the Palouse but Shepard isn't talking. He's passed on interview requests from CF.C and Scout.com. A recent article on ESPN does shed some light on Shepard's situation.
For those who don't know, Shepard is a 5-star CB prospect who signed with and enrolled at Notre Dame in January. He then left the school in March for health-related reasons, he later confirmed in the ESPN piece.
Shepard, out of Washington Union High in Fresno, was quoted by ESPN as saying the Notre Dame physical detected a problem with his heart and because he wasn't sure what to do, he dropped out and returned home to Fresno to try and decide the next course of action.
Shepard said his plan going forward was to a) get himself healthy to where he can pass a physical and b) look around at schools in April and May, and then make a decision on a new school, preferably one closer to home in Fresno than was Notre Dame.
Shepard, because he enrolled at Notre Dame, would not be able to play the 2012 season at WSU or another Division I school under NCAA transfer rules. He would not have to sit out the 2012 season if he were to enroll at a junior college.
Shepard, of whom it has been reported is "mostly" or "partially" deaf, was rated the No. 3 CB prospect in the nation by Scout.com despite sitting out his senior season in high school. He played only a handful of games as a junior at Central East and then lost his senior campaign after transfer rules kept him out of action in 2011. After the season, he had two interceptions in the Cal State All-Star game and also participated in the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl.
