"It's a verbal, they're No. 1 right now." Right now is the operative term because McLennan says he still plans to take all his official recruiting trips.
At this point, that would likely mean stops in Eugene and Fayetteville, as he said he has offers from Oregon and Arkansas. He also says he's hearing from Miami, San Diego State, Kansas and Nevada, among others.
"They're going in the right direction, the coaching staff is top class," McLennan said of WSU. "I love the defense they run up there and they showed me they care the most about me."
As for taking trips to other schools, he said, "I'm still going to go on all my visits. And I'll be going on a visit to Washington State too."
McLennan stands 6-3, 220 pounds. This past season at El Camino he earned all-conference honors after posting 77 tackles -- 10.5 for loss -- from his spot at outside linebacker. He said WSU is talking with him about playing the BUCK or WIL positions.
Speaking to the era in which we live, McLennan said he texted his verbal commitment to WSU assistant coach Dennis Simmons. "He was happy about it, they were all really excited, and Coach Leach sent me a message on Facebook telling me how excited he was about me."
McLennan is the eighth known verbal commit in WSU's 2013 recruiting class, and the fourth in the last three days.
