Cougs suffer injury blow on d-line

WASHINGTON STATE WAS already thin at the nose tackle spot, and now the Cougs are looking downright svelte at that position with a serious knee injury to a promising rookie.

Mike Leach and Washington State don't release any injury information but freshman nose tackle Robert Barber has a torn ACL that will require season-ending surgery, two sources close to the situation tell CF.C.

Offensive lineman Rico Forbes also is undergoing the same surgery, CF.C reported earlier..

Unlike Forbes, Barber is a true freshman and was not expected to start this season. In a perfect world, it would have been a no-brainer for him to be fitted for a redshirt.

BUT THE COUGS' depth coupled with the departure of Anthony Laurenzi plus other d-linemen across the Cougs' three-man front missing time to injury had opened the possibility of Barber contributing this season.

Barber was injured during Monday's team session after a nasty pileup of offensive and defensive linemen.

At the nose tackle position, the Cougs' top two players in fall camp have been Toni Pole and Ioane Gauta.

Pole has missed a considerable chunk of time and remained sidelined on Wednesday. Gauta has been running with the 1s since Pole was dinged up.
