The Cougars' 18th practice of fall camp was used to work on situational drills that to help them prepare for BYU's strengths.
"It was the first time we've done a practice like this," McGuire said. "There was a bit of a learning curve. Hopefully they'll come in next week and know exactly what's expected and come through."
The first-team defense spent a majority of the day running against the scout team offense. Freshman quarterback Austin Apodaca has physical abilities similar to that of BYU senior quarterback Riley Nelson, so the Longmont, Colo., native led the team.
Apodaca and Nelson have similar mobility -- shifty quarterbacks who can make plays outside of the pocket. WSU looked to contain the athletic quarterback all day.
Conversely, the Cougars' first-team offense, led again by senior Jeff Tuel all day, practiced against the scout-team defense, game planning for BYU defense. Tuel threw a crisp ball all day, hitting his receivers in stride.
Coach Mike Leach was unavailable for comment following practice.
A walk-on report is expected to be available tomorrow. CF.C will have a full breakdown.
