NFL Cougar Highlights: Week Eight

THE ALREADY small group of Washington State alums playing in the NFL got a bit thinner this past week, as receiver Jason Hill was released by the New York Jets.

He signed with New York just three weeks ago and caught a touchdown pass in his second game. Video of his "hopscotch" celebration for that TD went viral and his future with the club seemed hopeful. However, the six-year veteran became expendable when the Jets activated receiver Clyde Gates from the disabled list. In all he caught two passes for 15 yards and one TD for the Jets.

Hill started 10 games for Jacksonville last season—making 25 receptions and scoring three touchdowns—but was waived by the club late in the season despite leading all Jaguar receivers in yards-per-catch and touchdown catches. He was signed by Denver last spring, but was a late preseason cut.

The New Orleans Saints had worked-out Hill the day he signed with the Jets and were said to have been considering signing him at the time.

Here's how the NFL Cougs performed in week eight:

Erik Coleman, S, Detroit, 9th season: The Spokane native assisted on two tackles in the Lions' 28-24 victory against Seattle.

Jed Collins, FB, New Orleans, 4th season: No recorded stats from the Saints' 34-14 loss to Denver.

Eric Frampton, S, Dallas, 6th season: Tallied one defensive tackle and two more (1 solo) on special teams coverage in the Cowboys' 29-24 loss to the New York Giants.

Brandon Gibson, WR, St. Louis, 4th season: The Puyallup native caught three passes for 46 yards in the Rams' 45-7 fall to New England.

Jason Hanson, K, Detroit, 21st season: The Spokane native did not attempt a field goal, but was perfect on four point-after tries in the Lions' 28-24 win against Seattle.
