Marquel Combs (6-3, 310) out of Los Angeles' Pierce College is a prototypical nose tackle. His official visit to Washington State however was anything but typical.
"It really blew my mind," said Combs. "It shocked me…. Washington State just surprised me, I can see myself there."
What stood out for him? Everything.
"The defensive play was great," said Combs. "Another thing was how they fought. And I like the Mike Leach offense. Everyone on the staff was cool and down to earth… it was basically like a real family atmosphere. You get to be yourself there, and that's what I'm looking for.
"It seemed like a real good spot for me."
COMBS SAID HIS time with Leach and d-line coach Joe Salave'a further ingratiated him to the Cougar program.
"Me and Coach Leach (were great). He's a players' coach. And me and Coach Joe had a great time, talking about the defense and (scheme) -- we have a really good connection," said Combs.
COMBS ALSO SAID a sit-down with Bill Moos was an eye opener.
"I like the Athletic Director, Bill Moos, just what he did at Oregon and he's doing (the same at WSU). That was another thing I liked, just how they're putting so much money into the program," said Combs.
AS GREAT A time as he had at Wazzu, Combs did not commit -- he still has some unfinished business before making a decision and he's holding firm on his decision date. For Combs, that date is Dec. 19, the first day mid-year junior college transfers can sign.
Combs, who has 40-plus offers, has an official visit scheduled to K-State next week and one more trip available, to a school he hasn't decided on yet.
Note: Combs later texted CF.C saying he had WSU, Kansas and Kansas State in his top three.
ONE THING COMBS probably won't be forgetting soon, though, is the Apple Cup game itself.
"I rushed the field with all the players," said Combs. "The game was awesome, I followed how they moved, the defensive front -- I liked everything about it, I really liked it."
