IT GOES in the stat box as a quarterback hurry. But as quarterback take downs go, it ranks up there with Rien Long's overtime hell on Carson Palmer in 2002, Scott Davis' Apple Cup-winning sack and forced fumble in 2004, and Gary Larsen's various upendings of Sonny Sixkiller in 1972.
On the first play of overtime on Friday, Washington State sophomore Logan Mayes
, starting in place of injured sack-master Travis Long, turned in a play for the Apple Cup ages. His near-sack of Husky quarterback Keith Price forced the signal caller into the most ill-advised pass this side of Garo Yepremian.
Photographer Greg Davis, as you'll see in the gallery that follows, was there to snap every frame of Mayes' heroics.
But where, you may ask, is Toni Pole
's subsequent interception and rumble down the field?
Explains Greg: "Somebody cut in front of me when Pole caught the ball, and by the time I could've refocused on him, he was already flying well down the field and I was screaming at him to run, deliriously not even thinking about taking a photo...I'm such a homer!"
