Cougar verbal commit Jamal Morrow out of Menifee, Calif., set his official visit to WSU on Monday night, but he won't be coming alone. Morrow will be joined by one of his prep teammates at Heritage High, corner and Cal commit Darius Allensworth (5-11, 180). The duo will officially visit Mike Leach and Washington State on Jan. 18.
Allensworth committed to the Golden Bears in mid- August, but the recent firing of coach Jeff Tedford has him wanting to keep his options open.
"Right now I'm still committed to Cal," Allensworth said. "They just fired Coach Tedford though so I'd like to see who they bring in and hire. I was shocked, but at the same time I knew he was on the hot seat. My commitment is solid, but I want to see what's out there just in case."
Enter Washington State.
"I like the coaches a lot up there," Allensworth said of the WSU staff. "They want you to succeed in life and be more than just a good football player. They're rebuilding and I want to be part of a winning program."
ALLENSWORTH'S RELATIONSHIP with area recruiter Eric Morris is another reason why he's excited about making the trip. The two have been in contact since the Cougars first offered a scholarship in late May and have talked on the phone at least once a week since the football season started in late August.
"I talk with Coach Morris all the time and he's really down to earth," Allensworth said. "I've got a good relationship with him and he's a cool guy. We've talked about how they're trying to rebuild and how I could contribute for them next season at cornerback."
Allensworth will make the trip with Morrow, who committed to the Cougars back on Sept. 10. The two have been best friends since the fourth grade and Allensworth said Morrow is definitely in his ear promoting the crimson and gray.
"He's like a mini recruiter for them (laugh)," Allensworth said. "We've been best friends for a long time and we knew we wanted to do the visit together. Jamal keeps telling me how great it is, so I wanted to make sure to go out there with him and check it out. I'm really excited to go to Pullman and see what they have to offer."
ALLENSWORTH IS RATED the 78th best cornerback in the country by Scout.com and said the Cougar coaches have told him how much they like his toughness.
"I'm just a physical corner and I really like to cover a guy," Allensworth said. "I want to make sure they don't haul the ball in and I really get after it."
Allensworth held 14 early offers, including Arizona, Arizona State, Wisconsin, UCLA, Nevada, SDSU and several others in addition to Cal and Washington State. He took an official visit to Wisconsin on Oct. 27 and will be in Pullman in late January. He has no other official visits set up at this time.
Morrow and Allensworth led Heritage all the way to the CIF Southern Section Central Division football semifinals, where they fell on Friday 13-7 to Kaiser.
