That amounts to almost $3.64 million per school before expenses.
Oregon and Stanford each bring in $17 million for playing in a Bowl Championship Series game.
WSU QUARTERBACK David Gilbertson, the holder on kicks this year, told SportsPressNorthwest.com he will graduate in May and not return to the football team as a fifth-year senior.
Gilbertson, who came to WSU as a walk-on from Redmond High, threw his only college pass (an incompletion) in 2011. He is the son of former Washington Huskies coach Keith Gilbertson.
FORMER WSU PUNTER Jeff Banks has been named running backs coach and special teams coordinator at Virginia.
Banks played and served as a graduate assistant coach under Mike Price at WSU. Price recently retired as UTEP's head coach. New coach Sean Kugler hoped to retain Banks.
Jeff Choate, WSU's linebackers coach this past season, replaces former WSU assistant Andre Patterson (Price's personal choice to be the new head coach) as UTEP's defensive coordinator. Price's son, former WSU player and assistant coach Aaron Price, was not retained as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
Former WSU star Jim Michalczik is another veteran assistant coach who lost his job when the head coach was fired. Michalczik had been California's offensive coordinator and offensive line coach under Jeff Tedford.
NEW Idaho football coach Paul Petrino elected not to retain former Washington State quarterback Jason Gesser as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, but the Vandals will continue to have a Cougars presence.
Ronnie Lee, a safety on WSU's 1988 Aloha Bowl team, has been named defensive coordinator and safeties coach for the Vandals. Mike Anderson, a former student assistant coach and graduate assistant coach at WSU, is Idaho's new linebackers coach.
Lee and Anderson both coached at Idaho previously, and Anderson played for the Vandals. Lee comes back to Moscow from Indiana State. Anderson was at Washington.
ON THE HARDCOURT, Klay Thompson's transition from college star to NBA star continues to evolve. Not only has Thompson recovered from an early season shooting slump to help lift red-hot Golden State into contention for the Pacific Division lead, but the former Washington State standout is one of four Warriors featured on bobblehead dolls.
Thompson, know for his silky-smooth jumper, was struggling so badly with his shot last month that one Bay Area media pundit suggested it might be best to yank Thompson from the starting lineup. Thompson responded by scoring 21 or more points in seven of the next 11 games.
An All-Rookie guard last season, Thompson has improved most of his statistics from a year ago. He's averaging 15.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 0.6 steals and 35.2 minutes played.
"We have great chemistry among us," Thompson said recently. "Everyone's a great guy. We have a toughness about us we didn't have last year. We don't fold under pressure."
FORMER COUGAR Thomas Abercrombie has been selected to play in the National Basketball League All-Star Game on Dec. 22 in Adelaide, Australia.
The NBL is the top professional basketball league in Australia and New Zealand. Abercrombie, a New Zealand native who has played for his national team, is the second-leading scorer (10.3) on the New Zealand Breakers.
Eurobasket.com honored former WSU basketball players Aron Baynes and Thomas Kelati recently.
Baynes was named Player of the Week among Australian pros playing abroad. The center racked up 19 points and 16 rebounds in one game for Union Olimpija of Ljubljana, Slovenia.
Kelati was named Player of the Week for Polish pros playing abroad. Kelati, who grew up in Walla Walla, added Polish citizenship after marrying a woman from Poland. The veteran swingman scored 18 points in a key win for Valencia (Spain).
ON THE BASEBALL DIAMOND, Former Washington State baseball stars Mike Kinkade and Jim Horner have new jobs in the Seattle Mariners farm system.
Kinkade, who managed the Mariners' Rookie-class team at Peoria, Ariz., in the Arizona League last season, has been named hitting coach at Class A Clinton, Iowa, in the Midwest League.
Horner will manage Class A High Desert (Adelanto, Calif.) in the California League. Horner, the 2009 California League Manager of the Year at High Desert, lost his job as the hitting and catching coach at Texas Tech when head coach Dan Spencer was fired after last season.
-- Bonine signs: Former WSU pitcher Eddie Bonine has signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Bonine, 31, sat out last season after undergoing "Tommy John" surgery (elbow ligament transplant).
Bonine compiled a 7-3 record in 62 games (10 starts) with Detroit from 2008-10.
Travis Webb, who has spent his entire pro career in the Cincinnati Reds minor league system since signing out of WSU in 2002, has been invited to the major league spring training camp of the Milwaukee Brewers.
Webb, viewed primarily as a situational left-handed relief pitcher, posted a 2-6 record with a 4.81 earned run average in 54 games with Triple-A Louisville last season.
Former WSU football player Bob Gregory has been named college football's Linebackers Coach of the Year by FootballScoop.com. Gregory is the assistant head coach and linebackers coach at Boise State. The Broncos rank among the national leaders in several defensive categories.
