Gaines talks USC Jr Day

La Habra (Calif.) defensive lineman Greg Gaines is one of the top players in Orange County and took in USC's Junior Day over the weekend.

Greg Gaines is a talented tackle prospect who earned Freeway league MVP and all-state underclass honors last season after totaling 102 tackles, 16 for loss and eight sacks. Gaines shows up very well on film showing off a great burst off the line and is one of the most powerful line prospects in the region.

He's moved all over the line but plays on the edge a lot to avoid the constant double teams he sees when he plays inside. For a big man, Gaines shows very good closing speed, strong hands and does a great job getting off blocks and plays with a high motor.

"I had a real good time at USC for Junior Day, I liked it there a lot," Gaines said. "The new football facilities were spectacular and I enjoyed getting to know the coaching staff. I spent a lot of time with Coach Orgeron, the DL coach, and he told me about the new plans for the defense and I think I would fit in really well there.

"We didn't really discuss an offer, he told me they want to see me at their camp and he's very interested and eager to continue to recruit me. I also really liked the academic presentations, they really make sure the athletes are successful. They offer tutoring and freshman are required to do tutoring to help them get started."

Colorado remains the lone offer for Gaines but he's hearing from several other programs as well.

"I've talked to everyone in the Pac 12 except for Oregon," Gaines said. "I'm going to Boise State April 13th and hopefully they'll offer me. They just want to see my ACT scores but sound very interested and Northwestern seems to like me a lot as well. I'll also be at the NIKE Camp at Redondo in a couple of weeks and I'm looking forward to competing there as well."
