BASEBALL: Cougs to host No. 6 Oregon

THE MONTH OF MAY is fairly well defined for Wazzu on the baseball diamond – it's win or go home time for the Cougs as far as postseason play is concerned. For starters, teams generally need to be above .500 in conference play to make the postseason and Washington State (20-20, 7-11 Pac-12) isn't there yet.

The month starts and ends with significant tests as the Cougs will play the top two teams in the conference, Oregon State and Oregon. Both are nationally ranked in the top ten. Oregon is up first this weekend.

The Cougars host the No. 6 Ducks (34-11, 16-5) in a three game series Friday-Sunday before playing a nonconference game at Portland (16-28) on Monday.

Pitching Probables
Oregon-SO LH Tommy Thorpe (11 G, 11 GS, 5-4, 2.73 ERA, 69 1/3 IP, 59 H, 27 BB, 58 K)
WSU-SO LH Joe Pistorese (11 G, 11 GS, 4-3, 2.40 ERA, 75 IP, 73 H, 15 BB, 50 K)

Oregon-FR LH Cole Irvin (11 G, 11 GS, 8-2, 2.96 ERA, 76 IP, 73 H, 16 BB, 35 K)
WSU-SO RH Tanner Chleborad (11 G, 11 GS, 3-7, 6.02 ERA, 55 1/3 IP, 69 H, 21 BB, 33 K)

Oregon-SO RH Jake Reed (11 G, 11 GS, 5-3, 3.34 ERA, 70 IP, 58 H, 21 BB, 44 K)
WSU-RS-SO RH Scott Simon (11 G, 11 GS, 3-1, 3.66 ERA, 59 IP, 67 H, 9 BB, 36 K)

Beyond that, it's difficult to forecast how the Cougs may line up in the field. In 40 games this season, Washington State has used 36 lineup combinations. Further, at least five players have started at each of the nine positions in the batting order. With the exception of catcher and shortstop (two each), at least three players have started at each position.

The Cougs remain second in the Pac-12 with a .303 batting average

There are only 15 more games on the schedule for Washington State.
