Hard-nosed linebacker likes the Cougs

LINEBACKERS PROJECT TO be a position of need this recruiting class for Washington State -- and inside linebackers who tackle with their face are always welcome additions. One who fits that description, as evidenced by his junior film, scored a Washington State offer on Monday.

Three-star linebacker prospect Xavier Ulutu out of San Diego had been in contact with Washington State outside linebackers coach Ken Wilson of late. The Cathedral High School defenseman had a big start to his week on Monday when the Cougs offered.

"Coach Wilson told me that they're trying to round up some linebackers for the class and that they want me up there at WSU," Ulutu said. "He and Coach Joe Salave'a were at my school last week. They've both told me things are looking bright at Washington State."

In addition to WSU, Ulutu also holds offers from Colorado State and Boise State. WSU and BSU are on top for him, he told Scout.com's Greg Biggins -- and the WSU offer was a big one, he said.

"I was very happy and excited because it was my first Pac-12 offer," Ulutu said. "I love the conference and getting that offer really motivates me to work hard and prepare for my senior season."

At 6-1, 240-pounds, Ulutu moves well for his size and the Cougar coaches told him they think he can fit well in their 3-4 defense.

"They want me to go up there and play inside linebacker," Ulutu said. "Coach Wilson said he and the coaches watched my film and they loved how physical I am and how I play the game."

IN ADDITION TO his three offers, Ulutu said he's also receiving plenty of interest from USC, Cal, Oregon State, Washington, UTEP and several others.

"As of right now I'm pretty open with my recruitment," Ulutu said. "It's a little early in the recruitment process for me and I'm going to take time with my decision. I want to keep my options open and I want to go to a school that will benefit me athletically and academically."

As a junior this past season, Ulutu recorded 73 tackles (25 solo), one sack and one forced fumble.
