DAY 9: Short day before WSU Sunday scrimmage

LEWISTON — The Cougar o-line of late has lost more battles than they've won but during a shortened practice Saturday, the unit made improvements and gave the QBs more time in the pocket. A sophomore running back took advantage of his reps with the 1s, and it caught Mike Leach's attention. An extended scrimmage will take place Sunday and Leach had an idea on how many plays he plans to run.

"Maybe 70 (plays)," Leach said. "...but that counts all three sides…the 3s are going to get 30 of the 70…probably."

After a quick 45 minute practice, Leach seemed relatively pleased his players took advantage of the reduced workload.

"We were sharp today…certainly not perfect," Leach said.

The offensive line had a good day, bringing more energy and force to bear.

The No. 1 Cougar line did not allow any sacks during team session, and created room for the RBs to scoot into the end zone twice.

Senior OL Rico Forbes has been the anchor of the group and the vocal leader.

"Someone has to do it," Forbes said. "As an o-lineman I can do it and bring the energy and intensity and fire…the whole group in general will just pick it up and get things going."

The 6-6, 300-pound Forbes continued to show all of above on Day 9.

JUNIOR QUARTERBACK Connor Halliday made due with the short time by completing a 25-yard pass to Vince Mayle during 1-on-1. Halliday also tossed some additional sharp passes in 1-on-1 including a 15-yarder to junior WR Kristoff Williams.

Redshirt freshman QB Austin Apodaca used his legs and escaped a sack and found sophomore WR Gabe Marks in the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown during team session.

MEANWHILE, REDSHIRT SOPHOMORE walk on Jeremiah Laufasa was a standout at the running back position today. Laufasa received some work with the No. 1 offense during 11-on-11 -- and took advantage.

Laufasa had a strong 13-yard run during scrimmage and also caught a touchdown pass from Apodaca.

His performance was noticed. While Leach was addressing the media, Laufasa walked by and in the middle of speaking with reporters Leach turned to Laufasa and said: "Hey! Good job out there."

OVER ON DEFENSE and special teams, junior cornerback Tracy Clark had a nice outing.

Clark is further down the depth chart at corner but he displayed excellent blocking during punts by driving his opponents upfield. He also deflected a ball out of Gabe Marks' hands during 1-on-1 that was picked off by senior safety Casey Locker.

Locker also had an opportunity to intercept a pass from Apodaca again during 1-on-1, but the pass slipped right through his hands.

Senior CB Damante Horton also had an interception during 1-on-1 that was intended for Gabe Marks.

True freshman CB Daquawn Brown continued his strong fall camp.

He continues to bring a swagger to the defensive secondary and the 5-11, 170-pounder seems to be surprising everyone but himself.

"Everyone is surprised that I am playing so well." Brown said. "I expect myself to play like this. I was very prepared when I came out here and it is showing."

  • After practice, Leach informed the Cougs that they posted over a 3.0 grade point average for the summer session, resulting in a round of applause from the coaches as well as AD Bill Moos, who was in Lewiston to observe practice on Saturday.

  • Sunday will be the final practice in Lewiston. The Cougs are expected to get Monday off and then hit the field in Pullman for the first time this fall camp on Tuesday.
