DAY 20: Short and sweet for Cougs

PULLMAN — Friday's "practice" was short and sweet for the Cougs. The Cougs ran a mock walk-through, with the offense taking the field for about 45 minutes while the defense was at Rogers Field for all of 30 minutes. But CF.C was there to grab a few notes of interest.

The offense showed up first precisely at 3:00 pm wearing t-shirts and shorts. The coaches seemed to be preparing the Cougs for what an actual game week will be like. (A source told CF.C the Cougs are leaving a little later on Friday to spend the night in Lewiston. For home games, WSU heads to a hotel on Friday nights during the season.)

Junior QB Connor Halliday ran with the No. 1 offense under center during the mock walk-through. From our distant vantage point, it was difficult to pick out players because they were not wearing jersey numbers. However, the No. 1 OL that has been together for all of camp remained the same. Redshirt freshman QB Austin Apodaca took a few snaps and tossed a few passes as well.

The receivers who were running with the No. 1 offense were as follows:

X- Dominique Williams
H- Robert Lewis
Y- Brett Bartolone
Z- Gabe Marks

It's worth noting here that the Cougs have continually alternated many receivers through with the 1s this fall camp. Regardless of who was out there with the 1s in the mock walk-through, it's still hard to say who the starters are at this point.

The receiving unit as a whole looked active and engaged in the short walk through. The RBs went three-quarters speed and practiced honed details against the scout team.

After the mock walk through, the receivers all lined up and caught passes from four QBs.

At 3:45 pm, the offense finished their practice and walked back into Bohler Athletic Complex. Leach and his offensive staff were not made available to the media at the conclusion of the session.

As the QBs started tossing balls to receivers, the defense started filing into Rogers Field, also wearing shorts and t-shirts. Defensive coordinator Mike Breske talked a little Thursday about the importance of stopping the Auburn ground game on Aug. 31.

"We are preparing for the run game..." Breske said. "We have got to be solid in the running game if we can't get them in throwing down situations."

The defense went through some different looks from the scout team and like the offense, they too looked very engaged and focused. The defense was going about three-quarters speed against the offensive scout team as they mimicked different plays.

The defense finished up their short practice at around 3:55 pm. Breske and other defensive coaches were also not made available to the media.
