PRACTICE: Offense owns day, Morrow to corner

PULLMAN—On a day that belonged to the offense, the WSU wide receivers enjoyed a solid day, which was highlighted by an acrobatic reception by redshirt junior Rickey Galvin. On the other side of the ball, with some bodies banged up, cornerback Daquawn Brown saw extended time running with the 1s and a fellow true freshman moved from offense over to corner.

Freshman Jamal Morrow was recruited to Washington State as a running back, but the Cougar coaches had also talked to him about the possibility of seeing some time at cornerback. On Tuesday afternoon, the first-year frosh saw his first action with the defense this season, donning a white jersey instead of his regular red No. 38.

"We are going to look at him and see how he does," head man Mike Leach said. "If he can get on the field, we will put him there. If we can't, we will redshirt him."

Morrow (5-8, 180) factored in with the special teams today fielding kick-offs, but watched on the sidelines when the No. 1 and 2 defensive units took the field.

"We are going to see if he can help us at corner," Leach said. "If he can't, then we will move him back to running back before spring."

Senior safety Anthony Carpenter and CB Nolan Washington were in attendance today at practice, but watched practice in street clothes.

With Washington sidelined, it opened the door for freshman CB Daquawn Brown to see more time with the 1s.

"We will see," defensive coordinator Mike Breske said when asked if Brown will start against USC. "He is running with the first group right now, but we will determine that come Saturday."

OVER ON OFFENSE, the hosses on the O-line are playing with plenty of confidence following their solid performance against Auburn last Saturday. CF.C caught up with OL coach Clay McGuire and the second year assistant had some positive things to say about his players.

"It was one of the better performances we have had since we have been here," McGuire said. "But, right now, it is just a starting point. Our biggest focus is to get better every week and if we do that, at the end of the year we will be a pretty good unit.

"We have real quality back-ups. At some points we are looking to get other guys in just to keep guys fresh and to give other guys looks. I thought the other night our continuity was going pretty good and I thought we had a pretty good grasp of what they were doing on the field. So, I did not want to risk that by throwing in a sub that had not seen it."

THROUGH THE AIR, junior QB Connor Halliday continued to receive the majority of the reps with the No. 1 unit during 11-on-11 action. Junior wide receiver Rickey Galvin enjoyed a good day, including hauling in a touchdown strike from Halliday.

Galvin also made the play of the day. On a ball that was thrown out of his reach by Halliday, he managed to tip the ball and juggle it while falling to the ground and pulled it in for a nice 15-yard gain. Galvin tied his career high of five catches last Saturday against the Tigers.

After the team session, Halliday finished with two touchdowns, while redshirt freshman signal caller Austin Apodaca threw one. Apodaca's TD strike went to junior WR Isiah Myers after he ran a perfect route, got past his defender and hauled in a 20-yard TD.

THE HIT OF THE DAY came from junior SAM LB Cyrus Coen. During a running drill, freshman RB Gerard Wicks darted for an opening on the line, but he was met by Coen at the line of scrimmage as he made a fundamental tackle and drove him back for a two yard loss.

On special teams, senior kicker Andrew Furney nailed all three of his field goal attempts at the start of practice. Senior RB Leon Brooks continued to receive the majority of the reps as the No. 1 punt returner. The gunners working with the No. 1 kickoff team were seniors Deone Bucannon and Casey Locker.

• DL Paulo Lepua and OL Matt Meyer were no longer listed on the practice roster handed out to media on Tuesday.
