What's in a name? For new Coug, quite a lot

TWO THINGS IMMEDIATELY came to mind when three-star running back Squally Canada out of Milpitas, Calif. verbally committed to Mike Leach this weekend. The first is that he's a guy who both had a great senior season AND did some of his best work on the biggest stage. The second was that he'll soon be joining a select group at Washington State.

Squally Canada is on a roll. First, he and Milpitas High won the Central Coast Section Division I title game last weekend behind Canada's huge, 220-yard, four-touchdown outing. Then on Saturday, he made WSU his college choice during his official visit.

"It's been a great week," said Canada.

One of those four TDs in the title game came on a 41-yard reception, and Canada also had a 56-yard reception earlier in the year. Jim Mastro, the Cougars' running back coach and also a Milpitas product, has talked a lot with Canada on how the Cougs use their running backs in the passing game, and how the aim is to have their backs lead the conference in all-purpose yards.

"And that only helps get me prepared for the next level because right now, running backs have to do those things at the next level," said Canada.

Canada didn't have that many passes thrown to him this season, though. That tends to happen when a running back sets the program single-season rushing record, as Canada did at Milpitas this year. He'll come to Washington State fresh off a 1,879-yard campaign.

AND WITH A name like Squally Canada, he'll also join the most unique, memorable and plain old cool-sounding monikers to have graced Cougar football over the years.

It's a list that includes quarterback Samoa Samoa and walk on special-teamer Kyle Stiffarm. Canada won't come close to replacing the longest name, that honor will stay with kicker Romeen Abdollmohammadi. But because he plays the same position as the individual Cougfan.com selected as the all-time single-greatest name among the Cougar All-Name Team – Shaumbe Wright-Fair - that debate may renew again a few years down the road.

  • Canada's first name is actually Bryant but Squally is the nickname that stuck after it was given to him by his father. On the way home from the hospital the day he was born, his dad started calling him Boo-Squally. Shortly after, it just became Squally.
