Early JC Signing Day: WSU analysis

THE MID-YEAR JUCO SIGNING PERIOD, when junior college prospects who will receive their AA degrees in December rather than in the spring, starts on Wednesday. So what can CougFans can expect?

It looks like a quiet early JUCO signing period for the Cougs.

But it still looks like a high volume January out on the Palouse for early enrollees.

The early junior college signing period runs from Dec. 18 – Jan. 15. It looked for a long time like cornerback Joseph Turner would get his AA degree early, sign with the Cougs and enroll at Washington State in January. But that situation has now changed.

And it's more likely Turner will ink his Letter of Intent on LOI Day, (the first Wednesday in February) and arrive this summer, according to a junior college source with knowledge of the situation.

The Cougs' other known junior college verbal in the class, OT Miguel Machado, was always going to be a guy who would be receiving his AA in the spring.

(As CF.C posted on the ‘Suites last Friday, one day after Machado verbally committed to WSU he texted us and said after discussions with his family, they still feel strongly he should take official visits to Michigan State and Louisville. No dates have been set. We'll be keeping a close eye on things as we get into January to see if those visits occur or not.)

BACK TO THE early JUCO signing period which kicks off tomorrow -- Tuner and Machado are the only two known JUCOs in the Cougs' 2014 class and neither looks like a January arrival. But…

But six, count ‘em six, Cougars are expected to arrive early and enroll at WSU next month, join the offseason conditioning program and go through spring ball. Plus after that they'll get a full summer's worth of offseason work before fall camp kicks off.

It's the ultimate head start.

THE SIX INCLUDE Nick Begg, who eschewed his spot at Arizona State next month after delaying his enrollment with the Sun Devils as part of the 2013 crop. He will instead enroll at Wazzu in January. The plan at Washington State is for the 6-5, 255-pounder to develop into an o-lineman with the coaches giving him a look at an h-back/TE role this spring and/or fall camp.

Then you have the three who delayed their enrollment from the 2013 poll -- CB Markell Sanders, CB Marcellus Pippins and BUCK/DL Dylan Hanser – who are also coming in January.

And two more -- WR Calvin Green, OL Sean Krepsz – are graduating high school early this month. They plan, by this time next month, to have started their college careers at Washington State.

We'll keep an eye out tomorrow, as well as the rest of the junior college early signing period. And there can always be a surprise out there. But as of right now, the noise figures to come in January rather than begin tomorrow. THE INFORMATION IN THIS ARTICLE IS COPYRIGHTED.
