UPDATED: Porter picks Washington State

WITH SIGNING DAY less than a month away, WSU recruiting fans had been hoping the Cougs could add some help in the secondary to create some depth. On Friday morning, the Cougars landed a big verbal commitment from Cottondale, Ala. CB Patrick Porter, who committed to Washington State over offers from Miami, Minnesota and 16 other college programs.

The decision is in... Patrick Porter is a Coug.

Porter announced for Washington State during a press conference held at Paul W. Bryant High. Porter chose WSU over offers from Miami, Minnesota, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, North Carolina, Cincinnati, Iowa State, Toledo and several others.

"It was just my relationship that I had built with the coaches," Porter said. "Coach Leach is a great coach and he is turning the program around up there. They are moving things in the right direction.

"Academics was big for me too. I know if I go to Washington State, I can get a great education. They graduated five defensive backs alone this season. That shows me they care about their players. I'm excited to play football, but I'm also looking to get my degree."

PORTER CHECKS IN at 5-11, 170-pounds and said he prides himself on flying to the ball, completing a tackle and going after the ball. He added that he feels he could go in next season and make a push for some early playing time as a freshman.

"That was another thing that stood out to me about Washington State," Porter said. "It was big for me knowing I could go in next season and compete. With so many guys graduating, they need young players.

"Their defense is a good fit for me too because they play a lot of man, but zone coverage as well. I'm used to that and I think I'll be able to make plays."

ALTHOUGH HE HAS committed to WSU, Porter said he is still planning on taking his other official visits. He is set to visit Washington State on Jan. 17, Minnesota on Jan. 24 and Toledo on Jan. 31.

He is very much looking forward to that Pullman trip, though.

"I'm excited to get up there and check out the campus," Porter said. "I want to go to Washington State and see if I feel like I'm at home. The coaches have told me they have new facilities and everything there as well. I want to check that out too."

Porter becomes the 22nd known verbal commit for the class of 2014 joining CB Sulaiman Hameed, WR Ronald, Monroe, DE Kingston Fernandez, RB Squally Canada, OL Miguel Machado, OL/HB Nick Begg, OL Andre Dillard, DT Ngalu Tapa, LB Chandler Leniu, OL Sean Krepsz, LB Frank Luvu, CB Joseph Turner, K Tristan Vizcaino, CB Kevin Griffin, WR Calvin Green, WR Keith Harrington, WR Zaire Andre, LB Greg Hoyd and QB Peyton Bender.
